Why it is worth seeing The Golden Gate in Kiev
Kiev is one of the largest cities in Europe, administrative, economic, scientific, cultural and educational center of Ukraine. More than 3 million inhabitants live here. Over the centuries, Kiev repeatedly passed into the hands of various states and peoples; in 1934, on order of Stalin, Kiev became the capital of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic. The main attractions of the city are the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, St. Sophia Cathedral, St. Andrew’s Church, Khreshchatyk street and the Golden Gate. The latter is what we talk about in more detail.
History of the Golden Gate
Kiev, capital of Ukraine, has many interesting historical monuments. Golden Gate, built in 1037 by Yaroslav the Wise, hold a special place in this list.
For several centuries this building had not only defense functions, but it was a symbol of the power and independence of Kievan Rus as the state and Kiev as its capital.
By analogy with the Golden Gate in Constantinople, the Gate got its name (it was also the main entrance to the city). There is the church of the Annunciation in the tower above the gate.
Once a powerful fortification, the Golden Gate impressed with its grandeur and inaccessibility. As evidenced by the annals, it was impossible to capture Kiev from the Golden Gate. Even the Mongol-Tatars in 1240 could not take them by assault (although they used batterıng rums). The Gate was partially destroyed only when Kiev conquered.
Until the middle of the 18th century, the half-ruined Golden Gate was the entrance to the central part of Kiev. After Bogdan Khmelnitsky victory in battle near Yellow Waters in 1648, he triumphantly entered the capital through the Gates. A little further on the Sofia Square, where one can today find a monument to hetman, Bogdan Khmelnitsky was solemnly greeted by the inhabitants of the city.
But time was increasingly destroying the remains of this ancient landmark, despite regular attempts to save it… In the 70s, Kiev scientists examined the monument and decided to build a pavilion reconstruction that would not only accurately reproduce the Golden Gate, but also protect its original remnants from atmospheric phenomena.
From the outside, the entrance metal gates are performed after the ancient gates. From the city sıde, the Gate ıs covered with lifting metal-bound wooden bars.
Many peoples have their own unique religious or religious architecture. So, in my opinion, the Golden Gate is not just a defense, but also a fairly unique ancient Russian architecture.
The gate church is tiny – it is such a small structure with gilded dome. The facades of the church are decorated with ornaments made of bricks. The floor is decorated with mosaic that is patterned after the ancient floor of St. Sophia Cathedral.
To show the original form of the rampart, which in ancient times was attached to the gate tower, wooden grating were made above it.
The viewing platform of the Golden Gate (there are stairs leads upwards) offers a wonderful panorama of Kiev.
The Golden Gate pavilion reconstruction was opened in 1982 on the occasion of 1500 anniversary of Kiev. Now it is the visiting card of the capital of Ukraine. By the way, many historians believe that the restoration of the gate was with certain mistakes (for example, the height of the gates is greatly understated).
In the museum, there is a model of the Golden Gate, historical clothing, artifacts, maps of ancient Kiev and so on. It is interesting to see the preserved stone masonry, brick vaults and niches, walk along the stairs to the top, to the outer defense galleries and to the church on the very top.
Since this masterpiece of ancient Kievan Rus architecture is located in the historic Old Town, my general recommendations are walking tours, as there are many museums, architectural monuments, multiple spiritual and artistic centers in the district.
There are a lot of theaters, galleries, sculptures, monuments and other attractions around the Golden Gate. Nearby one finds several amazing cathedrals: St. Sophia, Vladimirsky, and St. Michael’s Golden-Domed.
It is difficult to leave unnoticed the nearby monument. It is monument to person, who was the reign when the Golden Gate was built – to Yaroslav the Wise, the prince of Kiev. They joke that he holds a cake in his hands.
Also have a look at ancient cast-iron fountain in the same square. The National Opera of Ukraine is not far away too. It is really beautiful building, a masterpiece of architecture.
- National Science and Natural History Museum of NAS of Ukraine
- You can walk for a long time and admire not only a huge number of stuffed animals in abovementioned, but alive species too. Kiev is a paradise for botanists and taxidermists.
- The National Museum of Literature of Ukraine and the Museum of the Sixties
- Museum of the history of the city of Kiev (interesting exposition, maps, documents).
Kiev also has lots of monuments and sculptures of cats. And each of them has already got their legends and signs. In Zolotovorotsky park next to the Golden Gate you can find two cats – the bronze Persian Panteleimon (pictured below); you can scratch his ears and tail to fulfill your desires. The second one is unnamed cat made of 600 plastic forks; it is hanging on a tree.
After long walks, one always wants to eat. If hunger caught you next to the Golden Gate, then besides many museums, there is a huge number of drinking and entertainment establishments and simply good cafes. Personally, I really liked the coffee shop “Harms Book Shop” (great cappuccino that will cost you 35 UAH). You may also like:
- Shkvarochka Cafe, Organic cafe on Vladimirskaya, Chest pub, Metla restaurant (quite cheap – on average lunch costs $5.5 (150 UAH);
- IL Molino Pizzeria, restaurants Eurasia, Murakami and Tres Branche (not the most expensive – you can have a snack for up to $11 (300 UAH);
- Irish Golden Gate Pub, restaurants Osteria Pantagruel and Le Cosmopolite (quite solid – prepare to leave $11 (300 UAH) and above.
All prices are rather conditional and mostly depend only on your appetite.
If you really got to the Gate, you just need to visit the museum. Especially it will be interesting to everyone who is at least partly fond of the history of Kievan Rus or architecture. In fact, there are very few monuments like the Golden Gate. Take the time and spend it for sightseeing in this city – it is a very small price for the impressions and knowledge you will get. And yet, do not be afraid to come with children, they will not be bored at all too.
