Kiev crematorium, the building in the shape of UFO, huge Soviet complex, the government block, and of course the main square of Kiev – Maidan.

Modern Ukrainian society painfully recalls the Soviet past: the Holodomor, the war years and Stalin’s repressions. This long 70 years of communism had a hard impact on our mentality, culture and architecture.

Despite the fact that now there is a decommunization process and we are removing Soviet coats of arms from the facades of buildings, destroying monuments to Lenin, all the same, the style of architecture in Kyiv is largely Soviet. The center of Kiev was rebuilt in the post-war years and was approved by Stalin, the residential areas were built during the time of Khrushchev. Also, there are still Soviet monuments and museums. If you want to see the most striking Soviet buildings, we offer you a car tour to quickly get to the most exclusive ones!

In 3 hours you will see the Kiev crematorium, the building in the shape of UFO, a huge Soviet complex where exhibitions of the national economy were held, the government block, and of course the main square of Kiev – Maidan.

For an even more complete immersion in the times of the USSR, we recommend in addition to book our tour to the Museum of the Great Patriotic War.

Khreschatyk Street

The main street of Kiev, which was completely destroyed during the WW2. We will tell you what it looked like in Soviet times, about its main buildings and the people who lived here.

Maidan Square

The main square of Kiev and Ukraine. A place where revolutions take place and victories are celebrated. A place of power for all Kievites.

Arch of Friendship

People's Friendship Arch‬ was dedicated to the unification of Russia and Ukraine and was constructed in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The arch was opened together with the All-Union Lenin Museum on November 7, 1982 to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the USSR and the celebration of the 1500th Anniversary of the Kiev city.

The Government Block

Here you will see the House of Government, where ministers of Ukraine work, as well as the House of Parliament, which is called Verkhovna Rada. Both buildings were built in the pre-war years, and were reconstructed after.

Vernadsky Library

The V. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine is the largest library in Ukraine in terms of the volume and size of premises, the main scientific information center of the state, and the research institute of the Department of History, Philosophy and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Kiev Crematorium is one of the most frequently mentioned buildings in the context of the architecture of Kiev modernism. In the 60s, people began to talk publicly about the tragedy of Babi Yar, so the idea of cremation caused negative associations and reactions in the community. And yet, in 1968, on the territory of the Baikovo cemetery, the oldest and one of the most famous in Ukraine, the construction of the complex began.

Plate on Lybidska

This grey decrepit building near the Lybidska metro station catches your eye from afar – one of its sections features the odd shape of an UFO hovering 10 metres above the ground. This futuristic edifice dominates the urban landscape and has already become an integral part of Kyiv.

July 6, 1958 - This is the day when the history of VDNG began. Built as a majestic site of achievement, it covers 286 hectares of land and counts 180 buildings and structures, 20 of which are protected as historical and cultural monuments of Ukraine. This masterpiece of the Soviet neo-Baroque architecture becomes a true symbol of the rapid post-war reconstruction and confidence in the country’s bright future.
