5 Rules for Solo Travel Tour to Kiev
If you are going on solo travel tour and you have chosen wonderful city of Kiev as your destination, make sure to read this article carefully. We collected all useful information about solo tours.
1. Check current situation in the city
Before you go on a trip to Kiev, check the latest news – what is happening in the country in general and in Kiev in particular. Focus on the main points. In addıtıon to the fact that Kiev is beautiful city with a lot of attractions and beautiful girls, pay attention to practical moments. Political situation in the country is stable; in May 2017 Kyiv hosted Eurovision – international song contest, which attracted over 30 thousand foreign tourists. Along with summer 2017, Ukrainians now enjoy visa-free travels to Europe. The city regularly hosts various events, even of international scale, such as the Atlas Weekend music festival, whose 2017 headliners were John Newman, Casabian, Prodigy and others. In warm months, food festivals, music performances on rooftops and beach parties are very popular – there are more than 16 beach complexes in Kiev and its suburbs.
In winter during New Year holidays, there are fairs and celebrations. Being Orthodox Christians, Ukrainians celebrate Christmas on January 7, so starting from the New Year celebration, almost all January is a continuous holiday.
Going to solo tours, think over your route and your actions, because nobody but you will think about it. You have bought a ticket for the plane, booked a hotel, got here – it’s good. To get to the place of your stay from Boryspil airport, use one of three available options:
- get by Sky Bus to the railway station for 80 UAH, from the station get to your hotel (apartment) by metro
- call after passport check use Uber (wi fi at the airport works) for 300 UAH
- order guaranteed transfer with a personal driver who will meet you with a name sign near the gate for 20 euros.
Everyone chooses his own way. However, you’d better not agree to the proposals of drivers at the airport suggesting to take you to the destination. Their imagination in determining a fare can be overwhelming.
2. Think about money
Book a hotel room or rent a room through online booking services in advance, for example, use Booking or Airbnb. In that case, you will not overpay. In addition, these sites have ratings and reviews by other users that will help to be safe from poor-quality service or scammers. The national currency of Ukraine is the hryvnia (UAH), and you need to pay in UAH or use card in all public places – cafes, restaurants, shops, taxis. If you eat in public catering and want to pay by card, please remember that the tip is never included in the price.
When it comes to price level, Ukraine ranks 45th in the world. In the heart of Kiev, in the bar called Porter Pub you can order 0.5 liter of beer for just 1 euro. If you need to use Uber from one point of the city to another, the average price is 2-3 euros. If you want to use public transport, pay directly on the bus (15 cents) and in the metro (13 cents).
If you want to visit glamorous bars and nightclubs in the evening, the average price for a cocktail will be 5-6 euros. Just remember that you need to take cash (Ukrainian currency) with you with or pay by card.
3. Think about your leisure time
Traveling solo tours find friends you will not see again. It is important to make friends on the other side of the world. Even if you never see them again! Otherwise, you will remain a tourist and not a traveler. You can lose the phone number of this new friend, forget his name, but you will remember this person and you will look at the city with his eyes.
There is a more reliable way to make a friend and at the same time learn about the city – is to get acquainted and use the services of a local guide, but not a boring one. Also, say no to group excursions – after you will be like a squeezed lemon and will not get any fun. Choose a private guide who will tell you some peculiarities of being in the city, tell about the local flavor, and will also show all the top places, starting with historical sights, ending with noisy bars and the best vareniki in the city (vareniki – Ukrainian national meal).
Before the trip, be sure to write down important contacts: the address and phone number of the hotel, embassy, and emergency services – in case the phone will be discharged or, what is worse, it will be stolen.
Be always in touch. If you are in Kiev for more than 2-3 days, buy local SIM card. Its price does not exceed 2 euros, and you can use local mobile Internet. As a result, it will be hard for you to get lost, you can always google the necessary information or call Uber.
Be sure to provide your relatives or friends with all contact information so that they know where you stay. Do not forget to ask before leaving, whether your relatives or friends have any friends in the city. It is not necessary to try to become friends with them, but in emergency, such contact may be extremely helpful.
5. Be ready to become a part of Ukraınıan culture
Ukraine is a country with 1500 years of history and recent Soviet past. 26 years has passed since the country gained its independence. In the rating of cultural objects, the country is on 51 place in the world. The level of health and hygiene gives Ukraine 8th place. According to the report of the World Economic Forum Competition in Travel and Tourism – 2017, the first places in the list are for Germany, Lithuania and Austria.
In Ukraine, most people are friendly and reliable. Do not reject help; do not hesitate to ask for anything you need. Ukrainians are always ready to come to aid and show the way, or tell time. Do not hesitate to bargain and cheapen, because knowıng that you are a tourist, local sellers want to earn, and thıs ıs the same for every country, not only Ukraine.
We love and respect our culture and history. Yet Kiev is quite a modern city, with good infrastructure, dynamically developing IT sector, high-class restaurants that are in no way inferior to European, expensive boutiques that offer all kinds of brands: Gucci, Versace, Loui Vuitton and so on.
So, we wish you all the best in your solo travel tour to Kiev.
